AGK Ancient Greek Keyboard app good for
Users had complained about not being able to combine rough breathing with uppercase Ρ (rho). This appears to work perfectly in v1.1.2 provided the P is entered first, followed by its associated diacritic (the rough breathing), which is then automagically positioned to the left of the P.
One thing that strikes the eye is that the apostrophe is rigidly U+0027 (APOSTROPHE), i.e. neither left-facing nor right-facing, and there is no way of forcing it to “resemble" an isolated smooth breathing, as it does in traditional typesetting. But, given the optical constraints of iPhone screens, and the general principle that function should take precedence over form, this is perhaps best thought of as a feature, not a bug.
I use this keyboard to type out sentences in my Greek class, after translating them from English. The way accents, subscripts, and everything else is implemented is great. This app is a lifesaver.
This keyboard is excellent for the student of Koine or Attic Greek. The stock apple keyboard does not include many standard diacritical marks (breathing, accents, and accent breathing combinations).
This keyboard also allows for two different style layouts. One allows for a single button to function for all marks (long press) and the other gives a single button for each mark.
Excellent resource for the Greek student using iOS.
Some bad moments
The keyboard works far too slow!! It should work as a proper keyboard...
great, except for the overloading of the click-and-hold of the global key to switch between keyboard modes, rather than keyboards, which is annoying. Otherwise, this is a fine polytonic greek keyboard
Easy to install, quick to switch to from the standard iOS keyboard, and simple in design. Overall a great keyboard.
One drawback is it doesnt appear to support Unicode. So if I type an character with diacritics, the diacritics will sometimes be ignored. For example, ἄ will be interpreted by some websites/apps as Unicode 945, which is plain alpha, instead of Unicode 7940, which is alpha with a smooth breathing mark and an acute accent. I hope the developer can add Unicode compatibility!
The only Ancient Greek keyboard currently available for iOS. Works well and is very useful as I am a Classics major; however, when typing in text boxes on some websites (mostly social media, it seems), diacritics do not place themselves properly on capital letters. This is rare, though. Great keyboard!
I really like this keyboard. This functionality has been missing from iOS for a long time. This keyboard gives me access to what I need to type out the correct Greek characters for the notes I prepare for our family Bible devotions. Thank you for helping me serve Ἰησοῦς as I serve my family and feed them the nourishment that my κύριος expects me to provide them with.
The time to switch between keyboards is very fast on an iPhone 6 Plus and an iPhone 6s Plus. The time to switch between keyboards was slower on my old iPhone 4s that I had traded in.
